How To Cut A Square Hole In Wood With Circular Saw

Making a plunge cut you can use a circular saw to cut holes out of the middle of a sheet of wood, but it requires a steady hand and a little practice.


How to cut a square hole in wood with circular saw. For a hole cutting job that involves larger square holes you’ll want to take a look at a circular saw. If you are using a hole saw attachment, you will need to first use the drill bit to create a hole in the center where you want to cut a circle. Alternatively, you can also make a jig and cut the tube similar to how you’d cut aluminum extrusion. Put your circular saw guide on top of the material and align the edge of the base with your marks. Measure the distance you want for your cut and mark the front and back of the material.

Place a speed square at the cut line and adjust the circular saw jig if necessary. That eliminates the guesswork of having to align your blade by eye, and then hold the saw it on the line as you cut. The technique consists of making a series of parallel cuts to facilitate work with a wood chisel.
